iBuyPower Has Entered the 3D Laptop Business

To be "in" these days, you have to offer 3D products, whether you sell anything from laptops to plasma TVs. Well, it looks like another computer-maker - iBuyPower - has thrown its name into the 3D laptop business. The company, which is known for its excellent gaming laptops, announced today their new Battalion 101 W860CU-3D.

The new laptop has a 15.6-inch HD screen with 1366 x 768 pixels, and it's capable of displaying 3D images. You can get the computer with a Core i5 or Core i7 processor, 8GB of RAM and a hard drive with 750GB capacity. Other options include a 512GB SSD. The Battalion 101 W860CU-3D also includes a DVD player/Blu-ray drive, a NVIDIA GTX285 discrete video card, and a 3D Vision package, which contains 3D software and a pair of 3D Vision active shutter glasses. It runs the Windows 7 Home Premium operating system.

As far as a starting price for the new gaming laptop, you can expect to pay between $1,600 and $1,900, depending on where you purchase it and what kind of specifications you're looking for.

The new laptop wasn't the only announcement iBuyPower made today. The company also announced the launch of two gaming systems that will feature NVIDIA's GeForce GTX 460. They are the Paladin E370 and F860.

The Paladin E370, which starts around $834, will have a Core i5 750 CPU, 4GB of RAM, a 500 GB hard drive, and 24x DVD writer in addition to the GeForce GTX 460. The Paladin F860 is priced at $1,849 and includes the GeForce GTV 460, a Core i7 930 processor, 6 GB of RAM, 1TB of storage space, and a 8x Blu-ray combo drive.

MSI's New GE700

MSI is announcing a new "gaming and entertainment" laptop: the GE700, which is a slightly larger version of the GE600, which debuted just weeks ago. It's powered by the Intel Core i5 and supports DirectX 11 for 3D graphics. It features two cinema-class speakers and a subwoofer, as well as Cinema Pro technology, which produces richer colors and a higher resolution, and an ATI Radeon HD5730 discrete graphics card with 1GB DDR3 display memory.

If you like to carry lots of files, this is the laptop for you. It supports two 2.5-inch SATA hard drives at 500GB a piece (or you can opt for 250 and 320GB if you choose). Unfortunately, the laptop is a little heavy at 7.05 pounds.

Other features include: Windows 7 Home Premium, a 17.3-inch HD TFT LCD Screen, HM55 Chipset, HD Webcam, 802.11 a/b/g/draft n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth V2.1 + EDR, a 4-in-1 card reader (XD/SD/MMC/Memory Stick), and a 9 or 6-cell battery.

There's no word yet as to when the laptop will be released or how much it will cost you.

MSI Introduces Two New Gaming Laptops

MSI has announced that it is adding two new models to its line of GX gaming laptops. The MSI GX740 and GX640 feature Intel Core i5 and support the latest DirectX11 gaming standard.

According to the company, these are the slimmest, lightest gaming laptops available. But as many point out, gaming laptops are usually pretty big and heavy, so that's not saying too much. Anyway, the GX640 weighs roughly six pounds and has a 15.4 inch screen. It measures about 14 x 10 x 1.5 inches. The GX740 is slightly bigger with a 17 inch display and weighs a little over 7 pounds. It measures around 15.5 x 11 x 1.5 inches.

In addition to the Core i5 processors, the laptops each come with an ATi Mobility Radeon 3D discrete graphics card, which, as mentioned, supports DirectX 11. The GX740 comes with the ATI Radeon HD 5870 card, while the GX640 comes with the HD5850 model. Both cards have 1GB of GDDR5 graphics memory. The cards are said to use less power, yet provide excellent visuals.

The laptops have several other exciting features. In addition to running Windows 7 Home Premium, both come with 4GB of RAM, Wi-Fi, a 2Mp webcam, a four-in-one card reader, SRS-certified Premium Sound speakers a digital 7.1 optical surround output feature, and a 640GB hard drive.

For sound performance, the GX740 incorporates five speakers into its design: two hi-fi 3D speakers above the keyboard, a woofer for deep bass in the computer's base, and two more hi-fi 3D speakers in the front. The GX6540 only has two speakers.

The laptops are also "green." They feature an ECO function button that allows you to switch between five different power levels, based on what type of task you are performing.

Both laptops will be available in the United Kingdom March. No word on how much they will cost in the United States.

Today gaming on a laptop has become possible at a reasonable price due to increase in gaming itself and the fact that prices have significantly dropped on laptop parts as laptops become more popular and mainstream. Today most mainstream laptops come with enough RAM and a good enough CPU to handle just about any game you throw at it, but the real issue when it comes to gaming on a laptop comes with what Video Card is inside your laptop. A Video Card is really only important when it comes to gaming, it is what makes all your games look truly beautiful and run at a crisp clean pace with no hiccups. Today though there is such a large amount of Video Cards out there that it is really hard to figure out what to expect when you buy a laptop with a certain video card. Well in this post here I hope I can at the very least give you a broad idea of what to expect out of your gaming laptop when it comes to performance in terms of playable games and frame rates.

For starters when looking at a gaming laptop make you are going to have to expect a few things. First is increase in price and size. A gaming laptop will normally weigh upwards of 11+ pounds and costs usually at least $1000. If you do not feel like spending a thousand dollars on a laptop all I can say for you is buy a desktop instead because they are just so much cheaper than laptops, but you will obviously not see the same portability as a laptop. Ok another thing to make sure to look for when buying a gaming laptop is make sure the laptop has 2-4GB of RAM, 2.0Ghz and up processor and preferably a 17” screen so you do not feel cramped when playing. The last rule is the most important and must be obeyed if you are going to game on a laptop and that is make sure it has a dedicated graphics card. If the graphics card is not listed on the spec sheet then more than likely it is crap and not worth buying, also if you see integrated or Xpress it is not a dedicated graphics card. If your computer does not have a dedicated graphics card it means that your graphics card is built into the motherboard and it is junk and you will not be able to play any new games at all on your computer.

Ok now that we have that cleared up lets look at graphics cards. Before I start if you are looking at a computer and you know the name of the Graphic Card, but do not know much about it then I highly recommend that you look at this mobile graphics benchmark chart. The chart will tell you where your card places against every other mobile graphic card and will also put it into a broad category so you can get a good idea of what game quality to expect. Of course if you want the best laptop out there to play games on then you have to go with the alienware laptops. Alienware makes there laptops specifically for gaming and they are extremely good at what they were built for. The costs of an alienware laptop usually averages around $1500-$4000. Now most people do not have that type of money to spend on a laptop. Most people buy usually a dell, hp, gateway, or Apple laptop. Most of these brands use the same video cards over and over again so it is usually pretty easy to find some good specs on the video card in the laptop you are looking at. The two most widely used video cards that I have sound is the 8400M GS and the 8600M GT. The fact is the 8400M GS is junk I would not recommend buying the card for any games at all, but the 8600M GT is a different story. Expect to be able to play games like Company of Heroes, Fear, and Supreme Commander fluently on High Details with this card. Do not expect miracles out of this card though, you will not be able to play heavy graphics oriented games on max settings and will probably end up settling somewhere around medium settings. If you are looking for a better alternative to the 8600M GT then I would recommend any of the 8700 and 8800 series any of the 9700 series and 9800 series. The main thing you want to remember doing when looking for a gaming laptop is when you find a laptop you like make sure to find multiple opinions on the laptop and also multiple opinions on the video card. Asus has brought it upon themselves to offer one of the first budget gaming laptops out on the market right now and after looking at the specs you could argue that it is the best deal out there right now. The new gaming laptop is called the G50V and it is well equipped to handle any of the latest pc games. Heres a quick spec sheet to show what all the Asus G50V has to offer:

• RAM - 4GB DDR2 800
• CPU - 2.53GHz Intel Core 2 Duo T9400
• Video Card – 9700M GT 512MB DDR3 memory
• Hard Drive – 2 250GB HDD’s for a combined total of 500GB
• Blue-ray-player (optional) – Raises price to $1,899 and reduces hard-drive space to 400GB

Total price for a computer with these specs is only $1699. The Asus G50V looks to be a bargain compared to similar products from Alienware and Dell’s XPS line. The only drawback is a 15inch screen; hopefully another model will be released later with a 17inch screen upgrade. As far as the graphics card is concerned it might not be a 9800 series card, but it is a lot better than the 8400m and 8600m series. Overall the laptop looks to be a nice mid-range gaming laptop.
