New Wooden Laptop from Fujitsu

With notebook vendor Asus recentrly announcing a line of eco-friendly bamboo-covered laptops, laptop vendor Fujitsu has adopted similar plans and has released its first environmental friendly laptop called the "WoodShell". This portable notebook uses cedar wood and bio-based plastics to form the casing and several other parts. According to Fujitsu, this laptop "is not merely an environmentally friendly tool but an object of enduring style and utility."

Currently Fujitsu's laptop is only available in Japan and it is unclear if the company plans to launch it world wide, but it is definitely a step in the right direction for the environmentally conscious. With eco-friendly laptops now a viable option for consumers, we may see more big name laptop companies following suite and creating greener laptops.

Disk Encryption: Not as Safe as Once Thought

Disk Encryption is a common technique used by people to protect private data on laptops and computers. Disk Encryption scrambles all data on the hard drive making it unreadable to those who do not have have the correct key or password. Many operating systems, such as Windows Vista, Mac OS 10, and Linux currently employ their own disk encryption software in hopes to provide more secure features for users.

Unfortunately, a new kind of attack that requires physical access to a computer can be used to render these encryption programs entirely useless. This type of attack is referred to as a "cold-boot attack" and takes advantage of computers that are currently powered on or in sleep mode. An uncommon fact that many people are unaware of is that RAM data gradually fades when the power is cut spanning from a few seconds to a few minutes.

This exploit gives the attacker time to read the RAM data, extract encryption, passwords, and any other data that is currently being stored in the ram. The RAM can also be physically removed and placed into a different operating system or laptop to allow a program to decrypt the data. Attackers can also extend the time of data decay by cooling of the memory chips with over the counter products such as canned air commonly used for cleaning keyboards with dust.

This exploit leaves many popular disk encryption methods insecure, and leaving laptops most vulnerable to these types of attacks. Individuals and businesses that commonly use laptops need to pay closer attention to the physical security of their laptops to prevent this type of attack from happening.

10,000 Laptops Lost Each Week At Airports

Bringing a laptop to an airport seems to be a bad idea according to a new survey. Close to 637,000 laptops are lost each year at airports across the U.S. The survey claimed that most of the laptops were lost close to security checkpoints.

Toshiba uses SpursEngine on Qosmio Notebook

The SpursEngine, which runs at 1.5GHz and 10 - 20 watts, is a multimedia co-processor derived from the Cell chip that powers the PlayStation 3. The co-processor does not replace the main processor in the computer, but runs alongside it, using its processing capabilities to boost the computers video-processing ability.

The Qosmio G50 and F40 will contain the chip. The chip will be called upon for process-intensive tasks like processing high-definition video. Toshiba says the new laptops will be able to upscale standard-definition video to high-definition video. On top of it they will be able to encode in ways that cut down file size by one-eighth and DVDs burn in half the time of current machines.

In a demonstration by Toshiba, a laptop with the SpursEngine had facial recognition for users that were in front of the laptop. It then applied makeup and hairstyles to the user. Whichever way the user turned, the makeup and hairstyles stayed and moved with the user. A second demonstration used the SpursEngine to search a video and break it up into scenes based on facial expressions.

These new laptops will be great for people who do video editing and do a lot of intensive video-processing. Toshiba intends to put the laptops on sale overseas but has yet to announce their availability.
